LIFERS - Jane Harvey Berrick

After eight years in prison, twenty-four year old Jordan Kane is the man everyone loves to hate.
Forced to return to his hometown while on parole, Jordan soon learns that this small town hasn’t changed since he was sent away. He is the local pariah, shunned by everyone, including his own parents. But their hatred of him doesn’t even come close to the loathing he feels every time he looks in the mirror.
Working odd jobs for the preacher lady, Jordan bides his time before he can leave this backwards town. But can time or distance erase the pain of living?
Torrey Delaney is new in town, and certainly doesn’t behave in a way the locals believe a preacher’s daughter should. Her reputation for casual hook-ups and meaningless sex quickly spreads. And that’s on top of her budding friendship with the hardened ex-con handyman—the good Reverend is less than thrilled with her estranged daughter’s path.
As friendship forms, can two damaged people who are afraid to love take their relationship to the next level? Can Torrey live with Jordan’s demons, and can Jordan break through Torrey’s walls? With the disapproval of a small town weighing heavily on them, they struggle to find their place in the world. Can they battle the odds, or will their world be viciously shattered?
Is love a life sentence?

Natalie's Review

Wow what can I say about this book, it is completely and utterly heartbreaking! what Jordan has to go through, and put up with had me bawling my eyes out.
Jordan has just returned from eight years in prison for an accident that he will never forgive himself for, he is the black sheep of the community where they need someone to aim their hatred at, which Jordan takes and takes because he feels he is worthless.
Torrey was living her dream life until her relationship with her engaged boss blows up in her face and she has to return home to her mother, to deal with the heartache she sleeps with anyone and everyone, afraid to let anyone close again Torrey will keep everyone at arms length, that is until she meets Jordan, everyone warns her to stay away from him and what started as rebellion soon turns into a lifesaver and soon Jordan and Torrey find they need each other in a world that is cruel and judgemental.
Jordan and Torrey must try and live with each other's demons, but is the weight too much for this broken couple to carry?
An amazing read I couldn't put it down my heart was breaking with every word I read, I loved it so much and is the second best book I have read this year, the ending surprised me I thought there was going to be something that wasn't there, I wish it had ended like that lol but that's because I convinced myself that was going to happen haha
I give this book a fantastic, completely addictive read 5 stars

4 Great Stars!!

I got the pleasure of receiving an ARC of Lifers by Jane and am so honored. Lifers is such a great story. It's a story that teaches you, one wrong choice and your whole life could be turned upside down.

Sometimes in life we make decisions and they aren't always good ones, but that doesn't mean we are bad people. Lifer's is the perfect story for this. Jordan Kane knows exactly what it is like to make the wrong choice and live with the consequences of it. When he returns home from prison, it's like he is living in his own personal hell. No one likes him, not even his own parents but he is stuck living in the small town he grew up in listening to all the hateful words from everyone around him.

He never expected to meet Torrey Delaney and especially for her to understand him. Torrey just moved to town for a fresh start with her mother, who is the local preacher. Her mom doesn't approve of how she behaves, and the town already looks down on her behavior. She doesn't have a relationship with any particular man, but rather has hookups. It's just easier that way. When Torrey meets Jordan, she can't help but feel drawn to him, as well as sorry for him. What begins as helping him and a friendship, grows into something more. Something special that no one can seem to understand, not even Jordan or Torrey.

Lifers is such a beautiful story about a man who must live with regret and find a way to move on with his life and forgive himself. Of a woman who must learn to trust and to let someone in to her life. I really enjoyed reading this story and can't wait to dive into more of Jane's books! If you want to read a book that will constantly make you want to keep reading then Lifers is your next book! I hope everyone can enjoy it as much as I did.

“What are you doing here?”
I didn’t need to look up to know who was speakingI recognized her voice. It wasn’t that hard. Apart from my family and the Rev, no one else spoke to meunless it was to yell curses.
I didn’t want to look at her, even though she was fucking beautiful, so I mumbled an answer.
“What? You work for my mom?”
That did make me look up. I thought she knew. Wasn’t that why she gave me the coffee? Because she knew who I wasthe local charity case.
I made a mistake when I met her eyes. I was immediately caught in her intense gaze.
“I thought you knew.”
“Nope, not till now. So you’re what, like a handyman?”
I nodded, unable to speak.
“Oh, okay.”
I couldn’t help my eyes drifting up across her body as she spoke. I guessed she must have just woken up because her hair was all tangled and she looked like she was wearing what she’d slept in. She held a mug of coffee in her hands and the smell of those beans had my nose quivering like a coon dog. But then she crossed her legs, and my eyes were drawn to the sexy boy shorts she was wearing and tight tank top showcasing the most fan-fuck-tastic tits that...
“My eyes are up here, jerk-off!” she snapped.
I felt the heat rising in my cheeks and dropped my eyes to the ground once more. I picked up the handles of the wheelbarrow and headed toward the back of the yard.
Stupid stupid stupid.

Jane Harvey-Berrick, Biography

I started writing contemporary romance two years ago. Before that, I didn’t think I could write a sex scene. Turns out I can!
My lucky number is 13 because I was born on the 13th and live near a haunted castle by the ocean. Mnumber one past-time is watching hot surfers get changed into (and out of) their wetsuits.
My husband doesn’t read my books. My mother does.
Writing is my love, my hobby, my total addiction. All my characters are important to me and whisper their stories, even when I’ve finished writing their books. That’s why you’ll often find bonus chapters/out-takes from various books, because those voices just won’t be quiet.
